Angus Hughson – August 2022

2021 Masso Montepulciano
92 points

Deeply coloured, this is a unique and striking take on Montepulciano. Opaque in colour, it is an immense and luscious wine bursting with decadent cherry ripe and blackberry fruits with a dusting of dried herbs that adds a nice savoury edge, all supported by ample toasty oak. It is then bold with robust tannins and mouth filling dark berry fruits lifted by some freshness through to a finish of decent length. It is more McLaren Vale than Montepulciano for sure.

2019 Mitolo Savitar Shiraz
94 Points

This classically dense and modern example of McLaren Vale Shiraz is a massive crowd pleaser that will knock your socks off. You will find immense colour – it’s almost black as the ace of spades. Then wave after wave of dark fruits from liquorice, blackberry, chocolate through to cocoa and spice. It’s big, but balanced too with luscious flavours and sweet oak providing a long, supple finish. An excellent vintage of Savitar.

2019 G.A.M. Shiraz
92 Points

There is lots to love about this vintage of Mitolo G.A.M. as it packs not only impressive levels of flavour but there is also great energy and brightness of fruit. Opaque in colour, the wine displays richly concentrated aromas of blueberry, liquorice, blackberry and dark chocolate with sweet oak in very good support. Well made and pitched, it then offers lavish levels of black cherry flavour with excellent purity topped by mocha oak. Structure is good and well integrated offering some aging potential but why bother when it tastes so good right now.

2020 Angela Shiraz
91 Points

Opaque in colour and another big, generous crowd pleasing style from Mitolo with lashings of chocolate, blackberry and liquorice with a nice touch of savoury spice and toasty oak. Dry, and full-flavoured, this has been well constructed with oak tannins providing length and backbone before just fading away a little on the finish.
